Getting a Learner Licence in QLD – What You Must Know
Learner licences are issued for 3-year periods when you pass the road rules test. To study for the road rules test, check our QLD Road Rules Prep Course or Online Practice Tests.
To progress to your red or green P’s (P1 or P2), you must pass the Q-safe practical driving test. The requirements for sitting the test are: (1) you must have held your learner licence for at least 1 year, and (2) persons below 25 years of age also need to have recorded a minimum of 100 hours of supervised driving (including at least 10 hours at night).
Learner Licence Restrictions
Learner licence holders are not allowed to do certain things. We’ve listed all the restrictions below:
- You must carry your learner licence at all times
- Your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) must be zero
- Your demerit points limit for a year is 4 (i.e. your licence will be suspended if you incur 4 or more demerit points within 1 year)
- You must have clearly visible L plates on the front and rear of the vehicle
- An open licence holder (supervisor) must always sit in the front passenger seat. The supervising driver must have held an open licence for that vehicle class for a minimum of 1 year.
In addition to the restrictions listed above, learner drivers under 25 are not allowed to use any function of a mobile phone, including hands-free, while driving.
