Renewing your license may seem like a daunting task, with different options and steps to complete throughout the process. However, there’s no need to worry.

In this blog, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about the Georgia driver’s license renewal process and how to get through it with your mind intact.

How Often Do You Need to Renew Your License?

You will be required to renew your Georgia driver’s license every 8 years. You may apply up to 150 days before the expiration date and will have a 2 year grace period to complete your renewal.

How to Renew Your Georgia Driver’s License

The state of Georgia offers many different ways for drivers to renew their licenses. These include; in person, online, and by mail. We’ll go through all of the different requirements below.

In-Person Renewal

One of the more common ways to renew is by visiting the nearest Georgia DDS center and completing the process in person. This is probably the easiest option as well, as there will be several representatives at the office that are ready and willing to help you.

You’ll need to complete the following steps to renew your Georgia driver’s license in person:

  1. Schedule an appointment
  2. Submit required license form
  3. Take photo upon arrival
  4. Take and pass vision exam (if you are over 64 years of age)
  5. Pay $32 renewal fee

Make sure to bring your current license so you can exchange it at the DDS center.

Online Renewal

Online renewal is also a popular option for Georgia drivers as it allows you to complete the process in the comfort of your own home. Most drivers are eligible – you’ll just need to log in or create a new account with the DDS.

To qualify for online renewal, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a non-commercial license
  • Have a valid license that is not suspended, cancelled, or revoked
  • Be a Georgia resident at least 18 years old
  • Be a US citizen
  • Have a license that is a REAL ID with a gold or black star printed in the upper right corner
  • Be under the age of 64

To begin, visit the Georgia DDS website or download their app and follow the instructions.

Renewal By Mail

In Georgia, you can only renew your license by mail under certain circumstances. You must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • A member of the military or a military dependent
  • Attending school out of the State of Georgia
  • Currently employed out of state
  • Handicapped and unable to visit a DDS center

To complete a mail-in renewal, you need to fill out the necessary form. Afterwards, mail it with your license renewal fee to this address.

What if Your License Has Expired?

You will be able to renew your Georgia driver’s license up to 150 days before its expiration date without penalty. The DDS also offers a 2-year grace period after the date. If you wait more than two years, you will have to apply for a brand new license and re-do all of the tests.

Driving with an expired license could lead to fines, suspension, and even potential imprisonment, as operating a vehicle with expired credentials is a criminal offence.
