    An Ohio TIPIC allows teens who are at least 15 years and 6 months old to practice driving under specific conditions. All new drivers under 18 years old need to hold their permit for at least 6 months before they can take the driving skills test. There is no such restriction for drivers over 18.

    You need to complete a series of steps to get your permit. This includes passing a vision test and a written knowledge test. Additionally, you need to provide certain documentation when applying. If you're under 18, a parent or legal guardian must co-sign your application.

  • What is an Ohio probationary driver's license?

    The probationary license is the second license in the GDL program. You will need to pass a road skills test to get this license.

  • What are the requirements to get a probationary license?

    If you are under 18, you must have held your TIPIC for at least six months, completed an approved Ohio Driver’s Education Course, and completed the 50 hours of mandated supervised driving.

    If you are over 18, you do not have a minimum time to practice with your permit, and driver's ed is not required.

  • What restrictions apply to a probationary license?

    • Driving between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. is prohibited unless accompanied by a licensed driver aged 21 or older, or you're traveling to/from work, school, or a religious event.
    • You can have only one non-family passenger under the age of 21 unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

    After six months, the driving restriction time changes to 1 am to 5 am, with the same exceptions still applying.

  • How many hours of supervised driving are required?

    In Ohio, you must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours of night driving before applying for a probationary license.
