Focus on traffic laws, road signs, DUI laws, penalties, and safe driving techniques. Your primary source should be the official South Carolina driver's manual, as it contains all the material covered on the test. Zutobi provides an easy-to-understand version of the manual, along with video lessons, unlimited practice tests, and other resources to help you prepare efficiently. What should you bring to the DMV?
- Proof of identity
- Social Security number
- South Carolina Residency documents
- Driver’s education certificate (if applicable)
- If you are under 18, parental consent is also required.
What happens after passing the permit test?
You'll receive your learner’s permit, also known as a beginner's permit. A permit allows you to practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. You need to be at least 15 years old to apply for one.Is driver’s education required to get a permit in South Carolina?
No, driver’s education is not required for a permit. However, if you are under 17 and want to apply for a driver’s license, you must complete a state-approved driver’s education program (which includes at least 8 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel practice) and hold your beginner's permit for at least 180 days. You’ll also need to complete the 40 hours of mandated supervised driving, of which 10 must be at night. What is the next step?
- If you're 15½ but less than 16, met the necessary requirements, and passed both a vision test and a road test, you can get a Conditional license.
- If you're 16 but less than 17 and have met the requirements (including passing your vision and road tests), you are eligible for a Special Restricted license.
What are the driving restrictions for Conditional and Special Restricted licenses?
- You can only have up to two passengers under 21 unless accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21. The only exception is if you're transporting family members or students to and from school.
- You may only drive alone between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Between midnight and 6 a.m., you can only drive with a licensed individual.
Both types of licenses have the same restrictions on driving at night and driving unsupervised. But with a special restricted license, you may get a waiver to drive to school or work during the hours of midnight and 6 am.
What if you’re over 17?
If you are 17 and older, you only need to hold your permit for 180 days. After this period, you’ll be able to take the driving skills test in order to receive your full driving privileges. What is the road skills test?
The road skills test evaluates your ability to operate a vehicle safely and follow traffic laws. During the test, you will need to demonstrate basic driving maneuvers. If you fail, you must wait two business days before taking it again. If you fail on the second attempt, you must wait seven calendar days. Why is Zutobi the best choice for studying?
