Pennsylvania Driving Lesson Requirements

🧢 If you’re under 18

  • You can apply for a permit when you’re 16 years old, which allows you to drive under supervision.
  • You must hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking the road test and log 65 hours of supervised driving with a licensed adult or driving instructor (find the log form here). This includes at least 10 hours at night and at least 5 hours in bad weather.
  • After passing the road test, you’ll receive a junior driver’s license, which allows you to drive unsupervised (with certain restrictions).
  • At age 18, all junior license restrictions are lifted.

👨 If you’re over 18
  • If you are over 18, you will be able to skip straight to your Unrestricted License after passing the appropriate vision, knowledge, and driving tests.
  • You do not have the requirement to complete the 65 practice driving hours, but it is still a good idea to get the same practice before the road test. We highly recommend you take at least a few professional driving lessons to build safe driving habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lessons FAQ

  • Who teaches the lessons?

Each instructor goes through rigorous hiring and training programs. Rest assured that you’re training with the best.
  • How long is each lesson?

Each lesson is two hours long, starting when we pick you up and ending when we drop you off. The lessons are customized and focused on helping you improve based on YOUR needs.
  • How many lessons will I need?

It depends. Most students complete the majority of the required driving hours with their parents, but have professional driving lessons every once in a while to address any remaining issues. Parents can sometimes pass on bad driving habits without even realizing it, since they aren’t professional teachers. Generally, a mix of both is best for the majority of students.

Here is a guide detailing the pros and cons of parent-taught vs professional driving lessons, and a helpful guide parents can use for better at-home lessons (+ tips for lesson setup).
  • Do I get feedback after each lesson?

Yes. You'll receive a post-lesson report showing what you’ve mastered and what needs more work. This way, you know what to focus on and can have more productive lessons at home.
  • Do you offer lessons for adults?

Yes, drivers of all ages can take lessons and get a personalized program based on their needs.
  • Do you offer home pickup and drop-off?

Yes, for most locations in Pennsylvania, home pickup and drop-off are included with your lesson. You’ll confirm your pickup address when you book online.
  • How soon can I start lessons after getting my permit?

You can begin driving lessons as soon as you have your learner’s permit in hand.
  • Can I take lessons even if I already have some driving experience?

Absolutely, each lesson is tailored to your current experience level.
  • Can parents participate in lessons?

Parents are welcome during lessons, especially for teens. You’ll also receive a post-lesson report, guiding you on what to practice at home.
  • How can parents help outside driving lessons?

As a parent, your involvement is the #1 safety feature in your teen’s driving journey. That’s why we offer the Parent-Teen Training Guide, a step-by-step resource designed to take the guesswork out of at-home teaching.

Driving Test & Licenses FAQ

  • Will your lessons help me pass the test?

Yes! The primary focus in the driving lessons is on core driving skills first to make you a safe, confident driver, which is what you need for your road test! You can also schedule a mock test near the end of your lessons to ensure you're fully prepared.
  • What is a Pennsylvania Junior License?

A junior driver’s license is issued after the permit. It allows you to drive alone with restrictions.
  • What are the requirements to obtain a junior license?

To qualify, you must hold a learner’s permit for at least 6 months, complete the mandatory 65 hours of supervised driving, and pass a driving skills test.
  • What are the restrictions of a junior license?

    • You may not drive between 11 pm and 5 am unless:
      • You have a parent, guardian, or spouse over the age of 18 with you in the car.
      • If you are involved in public or charitable service that requires you to drive.
      • Driving for employment.
      • NOTE: You must carry a notarized affidavit or other certificates of authority from your employer or supervisor to prove you need to travel during this time frame. You should carry this paperwork with your license at all times.
    • You may never carry more passengers than there are available seat belts.
    • You may NOT carry more than one non-family member under the age of 18 unless your parent, guardian, or spouse is with you and they hold a valid driver’s license. After the first six months, the limit is raised to three passengers under 18 (unless you have been involved in a crash or convicted of any driving violations. Then the limit stays at one for the duration of your junior license.)
    • If you accumulate six or more points on your driving record OR you are caught going over 26 MPH over the speed limit, you will receive a mandatory 90-day suspension.
