Texas Driving Lesson Requirements (by age)

🧢 Under 18 (Ages 15–17):

Driving lessons and driver’s ed can be taken at the same time once you have your permit.


  • Complete a 32-hour driver's ed course
  • Get a learner permit after the first 6 hours of the course (includes written test)
  • 14 hours of in-car training with a licensed instructor (7 driving, 7 observation)
  • 30 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) with a parent or instructor

  • Will you help me pass the driving test?

    Yes! The focus is on core driving skills first to make you a safe, confident driver. You can also schedule a mock test near the end of your lessons to ensure you're fully prepared.
  • What is the driving skills test?

    The driving test is meant to evaluate how you handle everyday driving situations. It is designed to evaluate four basic skills in every driver: Control, positioning, signaling, and observation.
  • How do I get a provisional license?

    To qualify for a provisional license, you must:


    • Have held your learner's permit for at least six months.
    • Completed parent-taught or instructor-taught driver's ed (7 hours in-car observation, 7 hours in-car demonstration).
    • Completed 30 hours of driving practice with a licensed adult over 21.
    • Completed the Impact Texas Teen Drivers program.
    • Passed the driving skills test.
  • What are the restrictions of a provisional license?
