Montana Permit Test & Driver’s License FAQ

Montana FAQ

  • What is a learner's permit?

A permit lets teens drive with a licensed adult. You must be at least 14 years and 6 months old to apply for a permit, but you will need to complete a driver's education program to do so successfully. If you are over 15, you can bypass the driver's education requirement.
  • How do I apply for a permit?

Bring approved documents to prove identity, residency, and lawful presence. You must also pass a written test, a vision test, and have your parents accompany you to the MVD.
  • How many questions are on the Montana permit test?

The Montana permit test consists of 33 questions, and you must answer at least 27 questions correctly to get a passing score (82%). The questions in our sample tests are nearly identical to those on the official exam.
  • What are the permit restrictions?

You may only drive under the supervision of a licensed driver.
  • When can I get a full license?

At age 16 (with driver's ed) or 18 (without).
  • What's required to progress to a driver's license?

You must have held your permit for a minimum of 6 months and provide proof of 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 of which must have occurred at night). You can then book a driving test and get your license.
  • What is a restricted license?

A license with passenger and nighttime limits for minors.
