  • How many questions are on the New Jersey permit test?

    The permit test consists of 50 questions, and you must answer at least 40 questions correctly to get a passing score (80%). The questions in our sample tests are nearly identical to those on the official exam.
  • What is a New Jersey learner's permit?

    A learner's permit allows new drivers aged 16 and up to begin supervised driving. New Jersey offers three permit pathways based on age:
    • Early Bird (age 16)
    • Young Adult (age 17–20)
    • Adult (21+)
  • How can you apply for a permit as a teen?

    To apply for your permit as a teen, you need to:
    • Pass the written knowledge test and a vision screening. If you fail, you can re-take the test after 7 days.

    • Have parental OR guardian consent.
    • Be enrolled in an approved driver's education course.
  • What are the requirements for different ages?

    The requirements vary depending on your age:
    • If you're 16 years old, You must be enrolled in a driver's education course. You'll also need to pass the written and vision tests.
    • If you're 17-20 years old, No driving school is required, but you must still pass the written and vision tests.
    • If you're 21 or older, No driving school is required, but you must still pass the written and vision tests. There are fewer restrictions and requirements.
  • Are there restrictions with a New Jersey permit?

    You must be accompanied by a licensed adult (over 21) who has had their license for at least 3 years. Read here for specific information.
  • What are the requirements to progress to a probationary license?

    You must be at least 17 years old, have held your permit for at least 6 months (if under 21), and have completed 50 hours of supervised driving. You can take the road test and get your license if you meet all requirements.
  • What are the probationary license restrictions?

    • No driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m.
    • Only one passenger who is not an immediate family member is allowed.
    • No use of any electronic devices while driving (even hands-free devices)
    • Seat belts must be worn at all times.
