Once you’ve found a good time & date for your lessons, you can reserve them immediately. You’ll receive a confirmation email and text message, along with other lesson instructions.
3. Start behind-the-wheel training
Learn everything from basic controls to safe, defensive driving with certified Illinois instructors. Each instructor has completed an intensive training course adhering to state standards (and beyond).
4. Get your driver’s license
Once you’ve completed the required hours, you’ll be prepared for the DMV road test. Once you pass, you’ll get your license.

Illinois Driving Lesson Requirements

🧢 Under 18 (Ages 15–17)

  • Before you can practice driving, you need to get a permit by passing the permit test. You can practice for it here.
  • You must complete a state-approved driver education course, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 6 hours of in-car observation.
  • Drivers under 18 must hold a permit for at least nine months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night). You can find the driving log for download here.
  • To drive unsupervised, you’ll need to upgrade your permit to a license by passing the road test (you can schedule the road test once you meet the requirements detailed above).

    All teens in Illinois must complete at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction (typically three 2-hour lessons) and 6 hours of in-car observation. For some, that is enough, and they do the rest with their parents. Others want more lessons to address any issues behind the wheel effectively.
