The Maryland MVA permit test consists of 25 questions, and you must answer at least 22 questions correctly to get a passing score (88%). The questions in our sample tests are nearly identical to those on the official MD exam.

While driving, you are not allowed to listen to music/radio using earphones or a headset covering both ears. This is because it will be much more difficult for you to scan your surroundings and cooperate with other road users.

You must leave at least three feet of clearance when passing a cyclist - this applies even if the cyclist is in a bike lane or on the road shoulder.

Is it safe to overtake in this situation?


While it may appear to be a normal passing situation, there are houses next to the road with vehicles that may suddenly swing out. Due to the risk of a crash if a vehicle moves out from their property, do not overtake unless you are confident it can be done safely.

When facing a STOP sign at an intersection:

You must yield to all traffic not facing a STOP sign

Always come to a complete stop when facing a STOP sign, even if you can’t see any other traffic nearby.

Oncoming trucks often appear to be driving slower than they actually are - this ‘speed illusion’ can cause you to believe that you have enough space and time to pass when, in fact, you don’t. 

It’s especially easy to misjudge the speed of large trucks near intersections, and how close they are.

Turn the wheels away from the curb when parking your vehicle facing uphill - this way, the curb helps stop your vehicle in case the parking brake fails.

Remember to apply the parking brake and to leave your vehicle in the correct gear (1st gear if a manual vehicle, and ‘P’ if an automatic vehicle). Leaving your vehicle in the correct gear will help prevent your vehicle from rolling in case of brake failure.
