Questions

You’ve just taken some cough medicine. What should you do before riding?

Never drive without first checking the side effects of your medicine. Even cough medicine can affect your safe riding or driving ability.

In which direction should you look first when arriving at an intersection?

The most immediate danger will come from the left, so you should always look to the left first. Afterward, look right and then left again to see if you missed any vehicles on the first glance. In short, this means that you should look left-right-left before proceeding.

What is the best way to stay safe while riding a motorcycle?

You won't be able to avoid driving in heavy traffic at all times, but you can increase your safety on the roads by having an appropriate following distance to the vehicle in front so you can easily stop if something happens up ahead. Remember that the safest speed in traffic is the speed of the traffic flow so you don't have to brake, stop, or accelerate.

If you double your speed, the braking distance will:

The braking distance increases quickly, especially when driving at high speeds. It’s important that you keep a sufficient following distance so that you have enough time to safely stop if anything happens.

When riding a motorcycle, your shoulders can sometimes obstruct the view in your mirrors. What can be done to solve this?

You need a good view all around the motorcycle. If your body or shoulder obscures the view, extend the mirror arms by fitting longer stems.

How should you cross tracks?

It is usually safer to cross tracks straight than to turn and cross them at a 90-degree angle. If you cross at an angle, you may move into another lane of traffic and cause a head-on collision.

In which of the following situations will your brake distance be longer?

The increased weight and change in gravity that comes with a passenger will increase the braking distance. If you are carrying a passenger, increase the following distance to account for the increase in braking distance.

Motorcyclists lane position should:

You have to position yourself in the lane postion that works best for the conditions you are in and change your lane postion as traffic situations change. Try to maximize your space cusion while being visible to others. For example; the center portion of the lane is usually best to be seen in the rearview mirror of a passenger vehicle, but not when following a truck. A truck driver won't have a rearview mirror so you must place yourself where you can be seen.

Which of the following can have an impact on your ability to ride your motorcycle?

Alcohol and drugs will have an immediate impact your driving ability, but emotions can also affect your driving. They will distract you and change the way you react. If you are experiencing turbulent emotions, you should ask yourself if you can safely ride before riding your motorcycle.

When is the best time to change gears for a turn?

Try to change gears before starting a turn. As a sudden change in power to the rear wheel can cause a skid, changing gears in the turn can be problematic. If you have to change gears while in the turn, shift smoothly so you don't cause a skid.

A motorbike will be easier to manuever when the weight is kept:

If you centralize the weight, it will be easier to control the motorcycle.

You are just about to proceed into an intersection when the traffic light changes from green to yellow. What should you do?

Think of a yellow light as the beginning of a red light, as opposed to the end of a green light. Stop unless it is dangerous to do so.

If you try to accelerate out of a wobble:

Do not try to accelerate out of a wobble as it will only make the motorcycle more unstable. The best way to handle a wobble is to not fight the wobble. Roll off the throttle gradually to slow down without applying the brakes, move your weight as far forward and down as you can, and grip the handlebars firmly.

If your belt/chain slips, what should you do?

If you belt/chain slips, you need to check it immediately. In many cases, it's enough to tighten the belt/chain. However, if the belt/chain is worn down you may need to replace it before riding again.

What does lane splitting mean?

Lane splitting is also known as lane filtering. It refers to when motorcyclists ride between stopped or slower-moving traffic, or to the front of traffic stopped at a traffic light. Lane filtering can be dangerous as drivers won't expect a motorcyclist there and may change lanes suddenly, open a door, or something similar.

The closer you ride to the vehicle in front:

The closer you ride to the vehicle in front, the more it restricts your view of the road ahead. Motorcyclists have to be especially careful about this as they may need to swerve or quickly turn to avoid potholes or hazards on the road.

How many seconds up your intended path of travel should you look?

Scan your path of travel to identify potentially hazardous situations. Look about 10 to 15 seconds ahead.

Where will most oil, anti-freeze, and other vehicle fluids collect?

Oil, anti-freeze, and other vehicle fluids tend to collect in the center portion of the lane. Make sure you watch for oil spots as you ride to avoid the most slippery places. Position yourself on either side.

You are following a large vehicle. Why should you maintain a proper following distance?

Any time you are following a large vehicle, stay a safe distance behind it. If you follow too closely, the other driver won't be able to see you in his/her mirrors, and the truck will obstruct your view of the road ahead.

What is “rubbernecking”?

The term often refers to motorists slowing down with the intent to look at a crash scene. It can be the cause of traffic jams and collisions as the driver is distracted. The safest thing you can do when riding past an accident is to focus on the road ahead of you.
