Questions

To minimize the risk of fatigue while riding a motorcycle, you should:

Riding a motorcycle is for most people more tiring than driving a car. To avoid fatigue, you should take frequent rest breaks, limit the distance traveled each day (ride no more than 6 hours per day), and avoid using any stimulants that will lessen your concentration as they wear off.

Will the road condition and road surface affect the stopping distance?

The condition and surface of the road you are driving on will affect the stopping distance. On dirt, gravel or wet roads, your stopping distance is greatly increased. Try to slow down before reaching a bend or curve on these types of road surfaces to prevent a disaster.

How much is the stopping distance affected when driving in heavy rain?

In wet weather, the tire grip will be reduced and the stopping distance will be doubled.

Young motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in an accident. Why?

It comes down to two things; overconfidence and inexperience. Young motorcyclists often make poor decisions that result in accidents. The right attitude is as important as safe-driving skills.

Do motorcycles do not need an equal distance to stop compared to other vehicles?

A common misconception is that motorcycles are able to stop much quicker than other vehicle and won't need as large a following distance, but this is false. It depends on your motorcycle, your reaction time, and much more. Don't make the mistake of following too closely to the vehicle in front.

The rate of alcohol consumption:

If you consume multiple drinks in an hour, more alcohol will have accumulated in your body than if you just had a single drink. Your body will not metabolize alcohol faster because you have had more to drink.

The only thing that will sober you up is time. Exercising, eating, drinking water, or sleeping doesn’t increase the rate at which your body metabolizes alcohol. It may take more than 18 hours to get back to 0 BAC after a heavy night of drinking (many are arrested for drink driving the day after).

Motorcycle riders are ____ at risk in traffic compared to other drivers.

Motocycle riders have to be especially alert to their riding enviroment due to how demanding and complex it is to ride a motorcycle. You must pay attention to potential hazards, make good judgments, and quickly make decisions to avoid danger. Motorcycles are more at risk in traffic than cars because they are smaller, harder to spot, and more prone to be seriously injured in an accident.

What should you do before stopping?

Before stopping on any road, use your mirrors to see what's happening behind you. If a vehicle is coming at a high speed behind you, coming to a quick stop may be unwise.

Which statement is true?

It’s not unusual for drivers to forget to signal (even though it is absolutely necessary!) or signal too late when changing lanes.

Try to determine in advance which vehicles may need to change lanes. For example, you can expect a vehicle that has just passed you using the left lane on the highway to soon merge back into your lane.

A motorcycle with its light on is ____ as likely to be noticed.

Keep the headlights and running lights on at all times, even during the day. Studies have shown that a motorcycle with its lights on is two times as likely to be noticed compared to when the lights are off.

You're at a crash scene and there is no risk of further collisions. What should you do?

Crash scenes can be chaotic and it can be hard to remember exactly what to do. One of the most imporant things to remember is calling for help as soon as possible as it can save lives.

A large truck moves into the left lane but signals right. What should you do?

Large trucks may need to swing wide to complete a turn. They also have larger blind spots than other vehicles, so if you move into the area to the right of the truck the driver may not see you. Stay back until the truck has made its turn.

Tinted eye protection or tinted face shields:

A motorcyclist needs maximum visibility to avoid hazardous situations such as potholes on the road surface. Do not drive with tinted glasses or a tinted face shield at night or when little light is available.

Motorcycles may have to "swerve" to avoid objects on the road. What does that mean?

A swerve is any sudden change in the direction you are traveling. Motorcyclists often have to swerve when they don't have enough room to stop even when both brakes are used at the same time. For example, you may have to swerve to avoid potholes, objects on the road, cars, people, and so on.

Which lane position should you be in as you approach an intersection?

When you approach any intersection, you must make sure that you can see other vehicles and that they can see you. Try to maintain a space cushion around your motorcycle that permits you to take evasive action if needed.

Why is it especially problematic to have had one or two alcoholic drinks as a rider?

Riders need to be especially alert and fit when driving to adapt to changing road and traffic conditions. Alcohol will greatly affect your ability to think clearly and be a safe rider, even if you have only had one or two drinks.

Which of the following will make it difficult to park a motorcycle?

You need to find a placec where you can safely set down the side or center kickstand. Loose or sloped shoulders, soft ground, or sloping surfaces will all make it more difficult.

The road surface can become soft in very hot weather. This affects:

Be extra careful when braking or cornering in very hot weather as your tires won't be able to grip a soft surface as well as they can a firm dry one.

How can you avoid the problem of opening doors and people stepping out from between vehicles?

By moving to the left portion of your lane you can avoid car doors opening & people moving out from between cars.

Why should you avoid following closely behind any vehicles towing or hauling items?

Any time you follow too close to the vehicle in front, you may not be able to react in time if they have to brake suddenly. But you are also susceptible to pebbles kicked up by the tires of the vehicle in front, or debris/loose items that fall off and that can place you in unavoidable dangerous situtations. For those reasons, following too closely is extra dangerous for a motorcyclist.

  • A motorcycle safety course is not required at any age in order to receive your Class M license, although they are encouraged.
  • Once you’re eligible, you can take your written exam at a local DMV, and once you pass this exam, you can schedule your on-road skills test.
