  • If you are getting a Driver Awareness Permit (for individuals aged 15½ to 16), you must have completed either a 30-hour driver education course or a 4-hour driver awareness program.
  • If you are getting a Minor Instruction Permit (for individuals aged 16 to 21), then no formal driver education is required, but it is highly recommended.
  • You must complete 6 hours of behind‑the‑wheel instruction with a licensed instructor (required if under 16½)

You must hold your permit for at least 12 months before you can take the road test and get a license (which allows you to drive unsupervised).
