Maine school zone speed limits are in effect during school recess and when children are going to / from school during its opening or closing hours. Look for signs that indicate otherwise. Be extremely careful close to schools as children are unpredictable and may cross the road without warning.

When may you turn left on a red light?

AFrom a one-way street onto another one-way street
BFrom a two-way street onto another two-way street

Many states allow drivers to turn left from a one-way street onto another one-way street, but that is not the case in Maine. In Maine, you must not turn left on red under any circumstances.

Texting while driving is:

ANot recommended, but legal

Texting or using a hand-held device while driving is prohibited for all drivers in Maine. This is because any such use will severely distract you and increase the risk of a crash. In addition, drivers with a learner or intermediate license are prohibited from using a cell phone at all while driving. It's recommended that you pull off the road and stop if you need to make a call. Never use a phone when driving in hazardous conditions as you must focus all your attention on driving.

For how long should you signal before making a turn?

At least 100 feet
BAt least 200 feet
CAt least 350 feet

To avoid being part of a crash, drivers should indicate well in advance of any moves. In Maine, try to signal for at least 100 feet before any lane change or turn.

Should you drive closely behind a vehicle you want to pass?

CYes, unless following a large truck

When driving closely behind another vehicle, you won’t be able to see as much of the road ahead and you won’t have as much time to react in case the other vehicle suddenly brakes.

Should you avoid braking hard when driving at high speeds?

Yes, as it may cause your vehicle to skid
BNo, but avoid it during wet conditions
CNo, but avoid it during cold or icy conditions

When you brake hard at high speeds, your wheels may lock up and cause your vehicle to skid. In icy, cold or wet conditions, you should also avoid hard braking.

If your wheels lock up and you skid, don’t accelerate or brake too hard! Instead, focus on maintaining control over your vehicle. Then take your foot off the brake pedal, straighten out the wheels, and begin slowing down gradually.

Which statement is true? Cutting in too close in front of a truck:

AIsn’t as dangerous as many people believe

Do NOT cut in too close in front of a truck when, for example, turning or exiting the freeway. Trucks need more time and distance to stop - so the truck may ram into the rear of your vehicle.

You want to pass a bicyclist on a narrow road. There is an oncoming car, and you are unsure if you have enough space to pass the cyclist safely. What should you do?

APass the cyclist anyways - if necessary he/she can pull over to the right
Wait for the oncoming vehicle to pass before passing the cyclist
CTry to pass the cyclist before the oncoming car is too close

Bicyclists are more vulnerable in traffic and more susceptible to e.g. wind gusts from passing vehicles. They may also wobble or swerve to avoid a hazard or changing road condition. By waiting, you can ensure that the road is clear and that you can give the bicyclist plenty of clearance when passing.

You pass your exit by mistake. What should you do?

AStop and back up using the emergency lane
BStop and make a U-turn
Keep on driving and take the next appropriate exit

Don’t stop or make any last-minute moves on a freeway. If you miss your exit, remain calm and take the next appropriate exit instead.

What does this sign mean?

Traffic signal lights ahead
BMalfunctioning traffic lights ahead
CYIELD sign ahead

Traffic lights ahead. Be ready to stop as you may face a red light.

What should you prepare for when you see these flashing arrows?

ASharp curve to the left ahead - slow down
Lanes closing ahead - part of the road will be closed
CRoad closed ahead - make a U-turn as soon as possible

Flashing arrow panels are often found in and before road work zones - they tell you to prepare for changing lanes or letting other traffic merge into your lane.

Which statement is true regarding speeding?

AThe risk of a crash will decrease
The risk of a crash will increase
CIt’s legal to drive over the speed limit

When driving fast you will have less time to scan the area for hazards, less time to react, and less time to respond if necessary. As a result, you’re more likely to be involved in a crash.
