Indiana Driving Lesson Requirements

  • Under 18 (Ages 15–17)

    • You must have a permit to practice driving. You get your permit by passing a written knowledge test.
    • You must complete 30 hours of classroom/online instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a state-approved provider. Our partner is fully licensed by the BMV.
    • If you don't go through Driver Ed, you must wait until you're 16 years and 270 days old before you can apply for a permit.
    • You'll also need to log 50 hours of supervised driving with a licensed adult, including 10 hours at night.
Once you've held your permit for at least 180 days and completed all of the requirements for your permit holding period, you can schedule your road test and get your probationary license. This license allows you to drive unsupervised with certain restrictions.
  • Ages 18-20

    • Must pass both the written test and a road test
    • Required to hold the permit for 180 days before taking the skills test.
    • Must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night.
  • If you're over 21

    • No driver's education or minimum permit period is required.
    • You will still need to pass a vision screening, the written knowledge test, and the driving skills test.
    • Professional driving lessons are still highly recommended.
