The Fastest-Growing Driving Searches

The biggest jump was for “how to drive on ice”, up 232%, followed by “how to drive in snow”, up 100%. Winter driving searches swing with the weather, and January 2026 brought a historic winter storm that hit more than 40 states (FOX Weather). “What to do after a car accident” rose 130%, and the most basic question of all, “how to drive a car”, doubled (up 102%).
When Americans search for driving anxiety, they most often look for its symptoms. “Driving anxiety symptoms” is the top related search, ahead of “driving anxiety therapy” and “driving anxiety treatment”.

5 Tips for New Drivers, Based on What America Googles
- Start studying for the permit test before summer. Interest peaks in July, so studying in spring puts new drivers ahead of the summer rush.
- Learn the right-of-way rules properly. Four-way stops, uncontrolled intersections and right turns on red are among the fastest-growing searches. They are also standard permit test questions.
- Treat driving anxiety as common, not unusual. Searches for it have more than doubled. Short, regular practice drives on quiet roads build confidence faster than occasional long ones.
- Learn basic car care before it’s urgent. Changing a tire and jump-starting a car are searched far more than any driving maneuver, usually at the roadside. Practice once at home.
- Practice winter driving before the first snow. Searches for snow and ice driving jump in January, after the bad weather has already arrived.

Methodology & Source
This report is based on US Google Trends data for 30 driving-related searches, collected on October 30, 2026. Google Trends reports relative search interest from 0 to 100, not absolute search counts. The ranking compares average interest over the past 12 months (October 2025–October 2026), with each search compared against the same reference term (“how to change a tire”) in groups of five and rescaled so that “permit test” equals 100. Growth figures compare average weekly interest from October 2021–October 2022 with October 2025–October 2026; Google improved its data collection on January 1, 2022, which may affect comparisons with late 2021. Seasonal patterns are monthly averages of weekly data from October 2021 to October 2026. State rankings use five years of data and show interest relative to each state’s total searches. Wyoming was excluded from the “driving anxiety”, “fear of driving” and “how to drive manual” rankings, where its values were more than twice those of any other state, which suggests sampling noise in a low-population state. All figures in this report were calculated directly from the underlying data.
