I’m a 21 year-old guy that already has a driver’s license, but I just wanted to reinforce and test my knowledge. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about subscription fees, but like other great apps, the creators have to make money somehow. Plus, it’s not even that bad for what you get ($4.99/week). Personally I never paid or used the free trial, I simply watched one ad every day, and finish in just 2 months! I do, however, have a few complaints of my own... 1. One question read as follows: ā€œYou’re driving in rain just below the speed limit, and you feel that you’re driving too fast for the conditions. What should you do?ā€ This is so simple & obvious that as you can guess, the answer was SLOW DOWN. 2. Another question read as follows: ā€œYou’re at a crash scene and there is no risk of further collisions. What should you do?ā€ The answer is ā€œcall the emergency services, unless already doneā€. This answer would’ve been fine except for the last part. You should call 911 no matter what. How else are you going to know it’s already been done? By asking everyone who’s there? Not probable. By assuming? It’s bad to assume, because if everyone assumes no one calls 911. 3. Last but certainly not least: ā€œYou have a friend who has had a few beers at a party. What advice should you give him?ā€ Answer is ā€œGo home by public transport or taxiā€. I think it’s not too bad of answer, but it should elaborate a bit more like saying ā€œwith a friendā€. I wouldn’t want an intoxicated friend taking public transport alone since they are more vulnerable or can even cause him to lash out at someone else. Overall, it’s great. I scored 100% on every lesson & test (although not all of them on the first try). Unfortunately I did get one wrong because how it was worded. Oh well, thanks for everything Zutobi:)

I literally love this app. I downloaded this app yesterday and studied all day. I took my permit test today and passed it with a perfect score. I don’t understand why everyone is complaining yes you do have to pay but there’s a 3 day free trial after that you have to pay. I did all 60 levels in one day because I had to take the test the next day. If you can’t afford it just use the free 3 day trial and memorize and much as you can. This app makes studying fun and entertaining. I couldn’t stay studying for more than 20 minutes on the Book I’ll end up falling asleep but I studied all day this this app which is shocking to me. There’s even an option to pay $9.99 a month instead of $4.99 a week. $10 a month is not expensive especially for the amount of information this app gives you! I know this a long review but I’m just in disbelief of how much I’ve learned in a couple of hours. When I first downloaded the app I literally had no clue about anything that do with driving. A Day later I passed my permit test with a perfect score. Anyways the point is I loveeee this app and give it a try!

At 20 years old it’s embarrassing to say that I just got my learners permit. I just ā€œgot aroundā€ to it because I suffer from severe anxiety and PTSD due to trauma from bad car accidents in the past. When I downloaded this app, I had no hope. I started using it to study, and thanks to the reminder setting, I actually went back to studying from time to time. All of a sudden I had the courage to try and drive in a parking lot, so I did. It was terrifying at first, but I did it. After a while of studying and the mini tests that the app provides, I decided to make an appointment to receive at least my permit. I got to the ā€œfinal testā€ on the app and I passed, I took it a few more times and I passed those times as well, so instead of waiting for my appointment, I just walked into my dmv. Of course I was still scared of failing, but I’m proud and happy to say that I passed with flying colors. Not a single incorrect answer. This app truly helped me learn all of the knowledge that I needed for the test, along with keeping me on track. I 100% recommend.

I began to study for the test, read the handbook, and took some practice test online and even got apps that had DMV practice test. Though some question I didn’t recognize on the DMV handbook. Then I looked for another source just to try again. I found Zutobi. It has questions that are from the current DMV handbook. And it has a study system that has videos, readings, quizzes, and practice tests. It has a program where you can learn each part of the DMV handbook. This helps everyone to study and have full proof method to remember what is on the test. I really wished I put more study time for Zutobi because it is interactive and you actually want to study. It’s not boring. When I took the actual DMV test, I passed. It’s not worded exactly like what you would see from Zutobi practice test, however I felt a strong confidence taking this test. I would recommend to use Zutobi as one of your study materials to pass the test. Thank you Zutobi for providing for us a great tool to study for the DMV driver’s license test.

Hi! If you want to get your permit but you just can’t sit down and read the book, maybe it’s the attention span (that’s me) or you just don’t have time (also me) or maybe the book is just too boring (also one of my problems šŸ˜‚) this app helps out with these problems a lot. It’s on your phone and so whenever you have free time just open the app click on the next chapter and start reading. The chapter are just shortened versions of the actual book so you get all the information you need just in a shortened version! The app is colorful and it’s like a game. If you pass the tests, you get points and go to different levels, with these different levels, you get a different car each time! So it really grabs your attention and makes you wanna keep passing the tests and keep up to see how many points you get. So if anything I said sounds like wow that sounds fun or wow that would really help me out, then definitely get this app and check it out! 10/10 would recommend! šŸ‘šŸ‘

I would recommend this app, It’s so worth it. I’m studying for my permit test and just taking the DMV practice test or trying to read the book is so boring. I feel they make the question very confusing and hard to understand but with this app I understand everything. I love that they give you pictures to show what is happening or what it is looks like. I like that they give you preview and explain about whatever section u are doing before taking the test for that section. It also explains to you why you got the answer wrong or got it right. Then after a few sections you can take a mini test on those sections u did already. I found this app very helpful so i would definitely recommend it. Especially you’re like me and a visual learner this is the app for you. Plus if you buy the app you get the first 3 days for free and then you start to pay for it. You can even cancel before you start to pay.

I am so nervous about my taking my test. I have been wanting to go to drivers school for a while now. I asked my mom she said it’ll have to wait then a couple of days ago me and my oldest sister was talking about how she was gonna get me a car and which one we wanted then she said something about drivers class that I’ve been wanting to go to. She called up to the place and signed me in I was excited then she said I had to take a permits test, I got scared because I thought I would fail it because I know nothing about driving really. My mom let me drive her car a few times and I did really good. I went on google to see what the questions was like and I barley knew the answers to them. Then I saw a ad for this app and I haven’t felt more confident taking a test in my life. If your looking for something that will help you pass your test for sure this is the app for you.

I LOVE this app. I have one year until I can get my permit, so I want to know everything about driving. This is definitely the perfect app for that. I have learned so much already about driving since the second lesson! The lessons are quick and easy. This app basically has you take these quizzes, and you answer which you think is right. (it's multiple choice) It will tell you if you're wrong/right, and then gives some helpful reasons why the rule is that way. The only thing I don't like about this app, is all the ads I have to watch because I don't have the full version. To unlock a level, you have to watch an ad. I understand that watching the ads help bring money to the company that made this, but maybe we can watch an ad every other level instead? Despite that, I love this app and definitely recommend it!

I can say I have a hard time concentrating and I needed something that was quick and easy for me to learn. I’m in my 20s and I have driving anxiety, so I’m barely in the process of getting my license. Been realizing for a while that I need to be a bit more responsible and to start driving. Tried to read the hand book, but couldn’t sit around to read it because I would get bored quickly and start doing something else. I downloaded this app and it was very easy! Almost every lesson in this app, I got at least a 90%. Passed all lessons, the final test, the signs tests, and practice tests in the app. A few days later after downloading this app, I went to my permit test appointment. Nervous, but hey I passed on the first try. Missed 3 questions! Thanks to this app for making it easy for me!

It’s not even expensive.. Single teen mom here who waitresses, so I’m busy. This app helped me stay on track. Everything about it is amazing. I have adhd and some learning issues, but the way they set the curriculum.. not too much reading but enough to inform you about everything. After each chapter (which none are super crazy extensive long) you take a short quiz. All throughout the levels. I think there’s like 62 levels before the final test. I’ve passed every level 80%+ and I’m on level 42 I believe. I love it. It’s an amazing app whoever created it deserves a raise and recognition forreals cus I still wouldn’t know anything abt driving or have the enthusiasm to get my license if it weren’t for this app. Definitely worth it. 11/10 would recommend

I failed the written test 3 times and was losing hope in myself. I struggled to read the handbook because I’m more of a visual learner and a lot of the things said were things I failed to understand or think about. It wasn’t until my cousin and mom recommended me this app that it has been the best that has ever helped me. After many websites and other apps, nothing has helped me understand the rules of the road more than this app. As a visual learner, it has helped me visualize and put myself in scenarios so much better than any other website or app has done for me. Today is the day I passed the test within a week of using the app, and I was able to successfully pass after all these months! I am very thankful and 100% recommend the app to people!

Disregard any bad commentary of this app! This app saved me because I have failed my permit test many times before. I have test anxiety and well before using this app I didn’t have any time or way to memorize any driving material. I would take my test stressed and ended up failing before using Zutobi. I used this app for two and a half weeks. You do have to pay to gain access of materials but it is well worth it. I took my permit test today and passed with 100. It sounds unbelievable but isn’t I promise. I could understand the questions and overall helped me. Thank you for creating such a well planned, convenient app that anyone can use!!! I recommend this for teens, college kids, adults, etc because of its convenience and organization.

I love this app. I passed my test because of this app. Only one tiny problem- there is one question on this app that does not match to that of the official DMV written test. My first time seeing the question on Zutobi I clicked my answer but it turned out to be wrong. I thought there was no way it could be that answer, but it was on Zutobi. On the written test though, I got the exact same question from Zutobi and I clicked the answer that Zutobi said to be correct. Guess what? I got it wrong on the written test! Turns out, the answer I knew from the beginning was the correct answer. Thanks a lot Zutobi. No I’m kidding, besides that one question, everything is accurate and very helpful. I recommend this app! Good luck :)

For an app that offers a premium service, but ESSENTIALLY since its a free app, its definitely worth the down load. Granted, if you have a good but of common sense, a majority of the questions are fairly easy. At the start I was reading the lessons they offer before the test, and its good information. However I found that even just skipping straight to the test I average getting 90% of them correct regardless. But the 10% I get wrong was a nice learning experience. They have state specific questions as well which I thought was nice. All in all I didn't need the app, but if your concerned about how clueless to feel when it comes to the rules of the road, this app does a great job to reaffirming your knowledge.

This app allows you to go over all the rules and regulations of the law, while driving. It’s a great way to practice and study before you are ready to take that step in getting your permits or license to drive. Chapters aren’t very long. Corrects you when your wrong, or mini test. And give you a chance to retry the question! Also test your knowledge by giving end of chapter quizzes. (Don’t correct you when you wrong. Give you a chance to see what you know on your own, and tell you how you did at the end of the quiz). That’s the best part! You’ll enjoy this app as much as I do! Considering, um studying for my permits. šŸ˜†šŸ˜† This app was recommended to me by a friend and I love it!

Is Zutobi a complete driver's ed solution for adults in Ohio?

If you're 21 or older, yes. Adults 21 and older are not required to take any driver education course to get an Ohio driver's license. Zutobi is your complete, all-in-one solution for passing the knowledge test and getting your license.

Adults 21+
  • 10-minute study sessions that fit a commute or lunch break.
  • No classroom, no schedule. 100% private, on your own timeline.
  • Video handbook that turns the Ohio Driver's Manual into short narrated lessons covering the traffic laws and signs you need.
  • Exam simulator matching your state's exact question count and passing score.
  • Road Ready System for behind-the-wheel skills and road test prep after you pass the written test.

If you're 21+ and you fail either the maneuverability or road portion of the driving test on your first attempt, Ohio requires you to complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before retaking it. That's 4 hours of class plus 4 hours behind-the-wheel with an instructor, or 4 hours of class plus 24 hours of supervised driving. Walking in prepared the first time is the cheapest, fastest path to your license.

Adults 18-20

If you're between 18 and 20, Ohio requires you to complete a Class D driver education course: 24 hours of classroom or online instruction plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training at a licensed driver training school. Zutobi is the essential study companion for passing the knowledge test and retaining the material from your required course.

  • Video handbook that turns the Ohio Driver's Manual into short narrated lessons covering the traffic laws and signs you need.
  • Exam simulator matching your state's exact question count and passing score.
  • Interleaved practice that mixes topics so knowledge sticks longer than cramming one chapter at a time.
  • Road Ready System for behind-the-wheel skills and road test prep after you pass the written test.

Quick Answer

Do adults need driver's ed in Ohio?

Adults 21 and older do not need a driver's ed course in Ohio. Adults 18-20 must complete a Class D driver education course (24 hours of classroom plus 8 hours behind-the-wheel). Zutobi is your complete, all-in-one solution for passing the knowledge test regardless of your age bracket.

Why Adults Choose Zutobi

Skip the bloated handbook

The Ohio Driver's Manual runs many pages. A large portion covers vehicle registration, insurance requirements, and office procedures. The rules that actually keep you safe on the road are buried inside material that won't appear on your test or behind the wheel.

Learn on the go

The course is delivered through short video lessons and 10-15 minute study sessions you can fit into a commute or lunch break. The exam simulator matches Ohio's exact format: 40 questions, 30 to pass. By the time you walk into the BMV, the format is familiar and you know where you stand.

What happens after you pass the Ohio knowledge test?

Ages 21+

  1. 1

    Get your TIPIC.

Once you pass the knowledge test and vision screening, you have 60 days to purchase your TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card) at any deputy registrar license agency. You can drive only with a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat while you practice.

  2. 2

    Practice at your own pace.

Unlike drivers under 21, adults 21+ are not required to hold the TIPIC for any minimum period and do not need to log practice hours. You can schedule your driving test as soon as you feel ready.

  3. 3

Schedule and pass the driving test.

Book your appointment through BMV Online Services. The test has two parts: the maneuverability test (forward and reverse through a 9' x 20' marker box) and the road test. Bring your TIPIC and a vehicle in good condition. If you fail either part on the first attempt, Ohio requires you to complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before retaking it.

  4. 4

    Purchase your driver's license.

Once you pass, you have 60 days to purchase your license at any deputy registrar license agency. Bring proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, Ohio residency, and citizenship or legal presence.

Ages 18-20

  1. 1

    Get your TIPIC.

After passing the knowledge test and vision screening, you have 60 days to purchase your TIPIC at any deputy registrar license agency. You cannot drive alone. A licensed driver age 21 or older must be in the passenger seat at all times while you practice.

  2. 2

Complete a Class D driver education course.

This is required before you can take the driving test. It consists of 24 hours of classroom or online instruction plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training at a licensed driver training school.

  3. 3

Log 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including 10 hours at night.

Record each session on the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit and bring the completed form to your driving test. There is no mandatory 6-month TIPIC holding period for adults 18-20 (that rule only applies to minors under 18).

  4. 4

Pass the driving test and purchase your license.

Schedule through BMV Online Services. Bring your TIPIC, your completed 50-Hour Affidavit, your Driver Education Certificate, and a vehicle in good condition. Once you pass the maneuverability and road portions, you have 60 days to purchase your driver's license at any deputy registrar license agency.

Ohio FAQ

Do adults in Ohio need to take a driver's education course?
It depends on your age. Adults 21 and older do not need to complete any driver's education course to get their first license. Adults 18-20 are required to complete a Class D driver training course (24 hours of classroom or online instruction plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training) plus 50 hours of supervised practice driving.
Do I still need a permit before taking the driving test?
Yes. Every first-time driver in Ohio, regardless of age, must first obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) before taking the behind-the-wheel driving test. You get the TIPIC by passing the knowledge test and vision screening.
How many questions are on the Ohio knowledge test?
The knowledge test is 40 multiple-choice questions on motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs. You must answer at least 75% correctly (30 out of 40) to pass. Try our OH practice tests to see where you stand.
What documents do I need to bring to the BMV?
You need acceptable documents that prove your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, Ohio residency, and citizenship or legal presence.
Is there a waiting period after I get my TIPIC before I can take the driving test?
No, not for adults. The mandatory 6-month TIPIC holding period only applies to drivers under 18. Adults can schedule their driving test as soon as they meet the other requirements for their age bracket.
Do I need to log a certain number of practice driving hours?
It depends on your age. Adults 21 and older are not required to log any practice hours. Adults 18-20 must log 50 hours of supervised practice driving, including 10 hours at night.
Can I drive alone with my TIPIC?
No. While driving on your TIPIC, you must always be accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
What happens if I fail the driving test on my first attempt?
It depends on your age. If you are 18-20 and fail the driving test, you must wait at least 2 days before retesting. No additional course is required because you already completed the full driver's education. If you are 21 or older and fail on your first attempt, you must complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course: 4 hours of classroom instruction (in-person or online) plus either 4 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor, or 24 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver age 21+.
Is Zutobi based on real learning science?
Yes. Zutobi's design draws on published research: micro-learning for short, focused sessions, interleaved practice for stronger retention (72% retention vs. 38% from blocked study), and retrieval-based quizzing.
Does studying in short sessions actually work for adults?
Published research found micro-learning (breaking content into 10-minute focused blocks) produces better retention than long study marathons. Zutobi sessions are built around that principle.
Is the knowledge test harder than most people think?
47% of licensed drivers in a Zutobi survey said they would not confidently pass if retaking their driving test tomorrow. The written test has a 38.3% national fail rate. Preparation matters.
