Colorado Driving Lesson Requirements

  • Under 18 (Ages 15–18)

    • First, you need a permit to practice driving - check here for more instructions and helpful tests.
    • If you are getting a Driver Awareness Permit (for individuals aged 15½ to 16), you must have completed either a 30-hour driver education course or a 4-hour driver awareness program.
    • If you are getting a Minor Instruction Permit (for individuals aged 16 to 21), then no formal driver education is required, but it is highly recommended.
    • You must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor (required if under 16½)
    • You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night (with a parent/guardian)
    You must hold your permit for at least 12 months before you can take the road test and get a license (which allows you to drive unsupervised).
  • Ages 18+

    Adults don't need formal classroom education and don't have a minimum driving lesson requirement. Professional lessons aren't required but are highly recommended for test prep, road safety, and insurance benefits. If you're over 18, you must:
