Illinois Driving Lesson Requirements

  • Under 18 (Ages 15–17)

    • Before you can practice driving, you need to get a permit by passing the permit test. You can practice for it here.
    • You must complete a state-approved driver education course, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 6 hours of in-car observation.
    • Drivers under 18 must hold a permit for at least nine months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night). You can find the driving log for download here.
    • To drive unsupervised, you'll need to upgrade your permit to a license by passing the road test (you can schedule the road test once you meet the requirements detailed above).

    If you're 21 or older, formal driver education or behind-the-wheel training is not required (but highly recommended). However, you must:
