Texas Driving Lesson Requirements (by Age)

  • Under 18 (Ages 15–17)

    Driving lessons and driver's ed can be taken at the same time once you have your permit.
    • Complete a 32-hour driver's ed course
    • Get a learner permit after the first 6 hours of the course (includes written test)
    • 14 hours of in-car training with a licensed instructor (7 driving, 7 observation)
    • 30 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) with a parent or instructor
    • Finish the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course
    • Pass the DPS road test
    The different in-car training options are:
    • Professional instruction from a certified driving school
    • Parent-taught driver education (remember that the same parent/guardian must complete all 14 hours)
  • Ages 18–24

    • Take a 6-hour adult driver's ed course (TDLR-approved)
    • Complete the Impact Texas Young Drivers (ITYD) course
    • Apply for a learner permit
    • Driving lessons are not required, but recommended for confidence and road test prep
  • 25 and Older

    • Apply for a learner permit
    • Driving lessons are optional but helpful for mastering skills and passing the road test
