Pennsylvania Driving Lesson Requirements

  • If you're under 18

    • You can apply for a permit when you're 16 years old, which allows you to drive under supervision.
    • You must hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking the road test and log 65 hours of supervised driving with a licensed adult or driving instructor (find the log form here). This includes at least 10 hours at night and at least 5 hours in bad weather.
    • After passing the road test, you'll receive a junior driver's license, which allows you to drive unsupervised (with certain restrictions).
    • At age 18, all junior license restrictions are lifted.
  • If you're over 18

    • If you are over 18, you will be able to skip straight to your Unrestricted License after passing the appropriate vision, knowledge, and driving tests.
    • You do not have the requirement to complete the 65 practice driving hours, but it is still a good idea to get the same practice before the road test. We highly recommend you take at least a few professional driving lessons to build safe driving habits.
