Teach Your Teen to Drive in Iowa

A structured, safety-first system for the 20 hours of supervised practice Iowa requires. Video-led by a certified driving instructor.

Teens with involved parents crash half as often. But the quality of that practice matters as much as the quantity.

Quick Answer
Can parents teach driving in Iowa?

Yes. Iowa requires parents to supervise at least 20 hours of practice driving (including 2 at night) before a teen can take the driving test. The supervising adult must be 21 years or older.

Why Your Role Matters More Than Any Course

Most teens get some professional instruction. Those sessions build some core skills, and for most families that's where the professional instruction ends. The practice hours that shape long-term habits happen with you, and the habits your teen forms during those sessions are the ones they carry into every solo drive.

The safety case for being involved
50%less likely to crash
71%less likely to drive intoxicated

Your involvement is the single strongest predictor of your teen's safety on the road.

Zutobi's proven parent system is built on these principles.

A CHOP and State Farm survey of 5,665 students. See the research →

The challenge is that most parents were never taught how to teach. You learned to drive years ago, and the skills became automatic. Without a plan, practice sessions drift. You might spend weeks on highway driving because it feels productive while skipping the intersection judgment that causes most teen crashes. Those gaps don't surface until your teen is driving alone.

The right order makes the difference. When skills build on each other across progressively complex environments, your teen develops real competence instead of scattered familiarity. You know what to cover, what to watch for, and when they're ready to move on.

The complete system

The Zutobi Parent Driving System

The Zutobi Parent Driving System gives you a clear, guided approach for every stage, from your teen's first time behind the wheel to test day.

The system follows a phase-based progression designed around how teens actually learn. Each phase builds on the one before it, so your teen never faces a situation they haven't been prepared for.

The Parent-Teen Training Guide (PTTG) gives you a guided plan for every session. Certified driving instructor Jacqueline R. walks you through each maneuver on video, explaining what to look for and highlighting the mistakes teens typically make at that stage.

Lesson-by-lesson progression from parking lot to highway

Video demonstrations from inside the car for every maneuver

Coaching prompts so you know what to say and when

Common mistakes to watch for at each level

Specific language suggestions for giving feedback without creating conflict

Progress tracking so you can see which skills still need work

Parents who follow a guided progression report less stress and fewer arguments in the car. This approach helps your teen not only pass the Iowa driving test but become a safer, more capable driver long after.

Your 5-Phase Plan: From Permit to License

Teaching driving becomes significantly easier when you follow a clear progression. Each phase below links to a detailed parent guide with specific coaching points and common mistakes.

1
Phase 1

Permit Preparation

Start by helping your teen build a strong understanding of the rules of the road. Iowa's written test is 35 questions with 28 needed to pass.

What to practice
  • Road signs and their meanings
  • Traffic laws specific to Iowa
  • Situational awareness and hazard recognition
  • Practice tests that match the Iowa exam format
How to coach it

Your teen should understand why a rule exists, not just memorize the answer. When you review practice tests together, ask your teen to explain their reasoning. If they can articulate why a right-of-way rule matters, they have learned the concept rather than just the test answer.

Watch for
  • Cramming the night before instead of practicing over multiple short sessions.
  • Focusing only on signs and ignoring right-of-way and speed rules, which make up a large portion of the test.

Iowa also requires a 30-hour state-approved driver's education course before your teen can apply for a permit.

How Zutobi also helps with Iowa permit prep

Zutobi is a safety-first supplement to your teen's required course. Teens use it alongside their driver's education program to reinforce traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving principles through video lessons, practice tests, and gamified review, so the knowledge sticks beyond test day and into real driving.

2
Phase 2

First Driving Lessons

Once your teen has their permit, begin in a low-pressure environment.

What to practice
  • Empty parking lots for initial vehicle control
  • Vehicle setup: mirrors, seat position, seatbelt
  • Steering, braking, and smooth stopping
  • Basic turns and backing up
How to coach it

Keep sessions to 20-30 minutes. Your teen's concentration fades quickly during the first few drives, and pushing past that creates frustration for both of you. Focus on one or two skills per session rather than covering everything at once. Stay calm and give instructions ahead of time rather than reacting at the last second.

Watch for
  • Starting on public roads too soon.
  • Gripping the wheel at the wrong position.
  • Braking too hard because the teen hasn't developed pedal feel yet.
  • Correcting too many things at once, which overwhelms a new driver.

Short, focused sessions build confidence faster than long, unstructured ones.

3
Phase 3

Skill Development

As your teen improves, introduce more complexity.

What to practice
  • Intersections and right-of-way decisions
  • Lane changes and traffic flow
  • Speed control and following distance
  • Scanning patterns and mirror checks
How to coach it

This phase is about developing decision-making. Instead of telling your teen when to go at an intersection, ask them to talk through their reasoning. Encourage them to scan left-right-left before proceeding and to check mirrors before any lane change. Repetition across different intersections and traffic levels builds the pattern recognition that experienced drivers rely on.

Watch for
  • Fixating on the car directly ahead instead of scanning the full scene.
  • Changing lanes without checking blind spots.
  • Rolling through stop signs or failing to fully stop at red lights before turning right.
  • Hesitating at intersections, which confuses other drivers.

This is where real awareness and decision-making begin to develop.

4
Phase 4

Real-World Driving

Now prepare your teen for real conditions. Iowa requires 2 of your 20 practice hours to be at night.

What to practice
  • Highway merging, lane changes, and exits
  • Night driving with reduced visibility
  • Driving in rain or fog
  • Complex traffic situations like multi-lane roundabouts
How to coach it

Increase complexity gradually. Start with a quiet highway on-ramp before rush-hour merging. For night driving, begin in well-lit suburban areas before moving to darker rural roads. Talk through what changes at night: reduced visibility, glare from headlights, harder to judge distances and speed.

Watch for
  • Merging onto the highway too slowly.
  • Not adjusting following distance for wet roads or low visibility.
  • Over-relying on high beams or forgetting to dim them for oncoming traffic.
  • Tensing up in heavy traffic instead of maintaining steady speed and following distance.

Teens exposed to diverse driving conditions during practice have fewer high-risk events after getting licensed.

5
Phase 5

Test Readiness

Before the driving test, focus on consistency and confidence.

What to practice
  • Smooth, predictable driving across all environments
  • Iowa DOT-specific maneuvers: parallel parking, three-point turns, lane changes
  • Following all rules without hesitation
  • Maintaining calm under observation
How to coach it

At this stage, your teen should be able to drive without you giving constant direction. Sit quietly and observe. If your teen can handle a 30-minute drive across varied conditions without prompting, they are likely ready. Practice the specific maneuvers the Iowa DOT tests. The examiner is looking for safe, controlled execution rather than perfection.

Watch for
  • Overthinking during the test and second-guessing decisions.
  • Forgetting to check mirrors or signal because of nervousness.
  • Introducing new skills or routes too close to test day, which undermines confidence.

At this stage, driving should feel routine, not stressful.

What does Iowa require from parents teaching a teen to drive?

Iowa's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program requires specific parent involvement before a teen can take the driving test. Here is what the state requires:

Supervised practice
20 hrs incl. 2 hrs at night
Supervising adult
21+ valid license
Holding period
12 months permit hold
Permit eligibility
  • Your teen must first complete a 30-hour state-approved driver's education course and pass the written knowledge test to receive an instruction permit.
Supervised practice requirements
  • You must supervise at least 20 hours of practice driving, including a minimum of 2 hours at night. The supervising adult must be 21 years or older.
Holding period
  • Your teen must hold the permit for at least 12 months before being eligible for the driving test.

Once all requirements are met, your teen can schedule the driving test at the Iowa DOT.

I’m a 21 year-old guy that already has a driver’s license, but I just wanted to reinforce and test my knowledge. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about subscription fees, but like other great apps, the creators have to make money somehow. Plus, it’s not even that bad for what you get ($4.99/week). Personally I never paid or used the free trial, I simply watched one ad every day, and finish in just 2 months! I do, however, have a few complaints of my own... 1. One question read as follows: ā€œYou’re driving in rain just below the speed limit, and you feel that you’re driving too fast for the conditions. What should you do?ā€ This is so simple & obvious that as you can guess, the answer was SLOW DOWN. 2. Another question read as follows: ā€œYou’re at a crash scene and there is no risk of further collisions. What should you do?ā€ The answer is ā€œcall the emergency services, unless already doneā€. This answer would’ve been fine except for the last part. You should call 911 no matter what. How else are you going to know it’s already been done? By asking everyone who’s there? Not probable. By assuming? It’s bad to assume, because if everyone assumes no one calls 911. 3. Last but certainly not least: ā€œYou have a friend who has had a few beers at a party. What advice should you give him?ā€ Answer is ā€œGo home by public transport or taxiā€. I think it’s not too bad of answer, but it should elaborate a bit more like saying ā€œwith a friendā€. I wouldn’t want an intoxicated friend taking public transport alone since they are more vulnerable or can even cause him to lash out at someone else. Overall, it’s great. I scored 100% on every lesson & test (although not all of them on the first try). Unfortunately I did get one wrong because how it was worded. Oh well, thanks for everything Zutobi:)

I literally love this app. I downloaded this app yesterday and studied all day. I took my permit test today and passed it with a perfect score. I don’t understand why everyone is complaining yes you do have to pay but there’s a 3 day free trial after that you have to pay. I did all 60 levels in one day because I had to take the test the next day. If you can’t afford it just use the free 3 day trial and memorize and much as you can. This app makes studying fun and entertaining. I couldn’t stay studying for more than 20 minutes on the Book I’ll end up falling asleep but I studied all day this this app which is shocking to me. There’s even an option to pay $9.99 a month instead of $4.99 a week. $10 a month is not expensive especially for the amount of information this app gives you! I know this a long review but I’m just in disbelief of how much I’ve learned in a couple of hours. When I first downloaded the app I literally had no clue about anything that do with driving. A Day later I passed my permit test with a perfect score. Anyways the point is I loveeee this app and give it a try!

At 20 years old it’s embarrassing to say that I just got my learners permit. I just ā€œgot aroundā€ to it because I suffer from severe anxiety and PTSD due to trauma from bad car accidents in the past. When I downloaded this app, I had no hope. I started using it to study, and thanks to the reminder setting, I actually went back to studying from time to time. All of a sudden I had the courage to try and drive in a parking lot, so I did. It was terrifying at first, but I did it. After a while of studying and the mini tests that the app provides, I decided to make an appointment to receive at least my permit. I got to the ā€œfinal testā€ on the app and I passed, I took it a few more times and I passed those times as well, so instead of waiting for my appointment, I just walked into my dmv. Of course I was still scared of failing, but I’m proud and happy to say that I passed with flying colors. Not a single incorrect answer. This app truly helped me learn all of the knowledge that I needed for the test, along with keeping me on track. I 100% recommend.

I began to study for the test, read the handbook, and took some practice test online and even got apps that had DMV practice test. Though some question I didn’t recognize on the DMV handbook. Then I looked for another source just to try again. I found Zutobi. It has questions that are from the current DMV handbook. And it has a study system that has videos, readings, quizzes, and practice tests. It has a program where you can learn each part of the DMV handbook. This helps everyone to study and have full proof method to remember what is on the test. I really wished I put more study time for Zutobi because it is interactive and you actually want to study. It’s not boring. When I took the actual DMV test, I passed. It’s not worded exactly like what you would see from Zutobi practice test, however I felt a strong confidence taking this test. I would recommend to use Zutobi as one of your study materials to pass the test. Thank you Zutobi for providing for us a great tool to study for the DMV driver’s license test.

Hi! If you want to get your permit but you just can’t sit down and read the book, maybe it’s the attention span (that’s me) or you just don’t have time (also me) or maybe the book is just too boring (also one of my problems šŸ˜‚) this app helps out with these problems a lot. It’s on your phone and so whenever you have free time just open the app click on the next chapter and start reading. The chapter are just shortened versions of the actual book so you get all the information you need just in a shortened version! The app is colorful and it’s like a game. If you pass the tests, you get points and go to different levels, with these different levels, you get a different car each time! So it really grabs your attention and makes you wanna keep passing the tests and keep up to see how many points you get. So if anything I said sounds like wow that sounds fun or wow that would really help me out, then definitely get this app and check it out! 10/10 would recommend! šŸ‘šŸ‘

I would recommend this app, It’s so worth it. I’m studying for my permit test and just taking the DMV practice test or trying to read the book is so boring. I feel they make the question very confusing and hard to understand but with this app I understand everything. I love that they give you pictures to show what is happening or what it is looks like. I like that they give you preview and explain about whatever section u are doing before taking the test for that section. It also explains to you why you got the answer wrong or got it right. Then after a few sections you can take a mini test on those sections u did already. I found this app very helpful so i would definitely recommend it. Especially you’re like me and a visual learner this is the app for you. Plus if you buy the app you get the first 3 days for free and then you start to pay for it. You can even cancel before you start to pay.

I am so nervous about my taking my test. I have been wanting to go to drivers school for a while now. I asked my mom she said it’ll have to wait then a couple of days ago me and my oldest sister was talking about how she was gonna get me a car and which one we wanted then she said something about drivers class that I’ve been wanting to go to. She called up to the place and signed me in I was excited then she said I had to take a permits test, I got scared because I thought I would fail it because I know nothing about driving really. My mom let me drive her car a few times and I did really good. I went on google to see what the questions was like and I barley knew the answers to them. Then I saw a ad for this app and I haven’t felt more confident taking a test in my life. If your looking for something that will help you pass your test for sure this is the app for you.

I LOVE this app. I have one year until I can get my permit, so I want to know everything about driving. This is definitely the perfect app for that. I have learned so much already about driving since the second lesson! The lessons are quick and easy. This app basically has you take these quizzes, and you answer which you think is right. (it's multiple choice) It will tell you if you're wrong/right, and then gives some helpful reasons why the rule is that way. The only thing I don't like about this app, is all the ads I have to watch because I don't have the full version. To unlock a level, you have to watch an ad. I understand that watching the ads help bring money to the company that made this, but maybe we can watch an ad every other level instead? Despite that, I love this app and definitely recommend it!

I can say I have a hard time concentrating and I needed something that was quick and easy for me to learn. I’m in my 20s and I have driving anxiety, so I’m barely in the process of getting my license. Been realizing for a while that I need to be a bit more responsible and to start driving. Tried to read the hand book, but couldn’t sit around to read it because I would get bored quickly and start doing something else. I downloaded this app and it was very easy! Almost every lesson in this app, I got at least a 90%. Passed all lessons, the final test, the signs tests, and practice tests in the app. A few days later after downloading this app, I went to my permit test appointment. Nervous, but hey I passed on the first try. Missed 3 questions! Thanks to this app for making it easy for me!

It’s not even expensive.. Single teen mom here who waitresses, so I’m busy. This app helped me stay on track. Everything about it is amazing. I have adhd and some learning issues, but the way they set the curriculum.. not too much reading but enough to inform you about everything. After each chapter (which none are super crazy extensive long) you take a short quiz. All throughout the levels. I think there’s like 62 levels before the final test. I’ve passed every level 80%+ and I’m on level 42 I believe. I love it. It’s an amazing app whoever created it deserves a raise and recognition forreals cus I still wouldn’t know anything abt driving or have the enthusiasm to get my license if it weren’t for this app. Definitely worth it. 11/10 would recommend

I failed the written test 3 times and was losing hope in myself. I struggled to read the handbook because I’m more of a visual learner and a lot of the things said were things I failed to understand or think about. It wasn’t until my cousin and mom recommended me this app that it has been the best that has ever helped me. After many websites and other apps, nothing has helped me understand the rules of the road more than this app. As a visual learner, it has helped me visualize and put myself in scenarios so much better than any other website or app has done for me. Today is the day I passed the test within a week of using the app, and I was able to successfully pass after all these months! I am very thankful and 100% recommend the app to people!

Disregard any bad commentary of this app! This app saved me because I have failed my permit test many times before. I have test anxiety and well before using this app I didn’t have any time or way to memorize any driving material. I would take my test stressed and ended up failing before using Zutobi. I used this app for two and a half weeks. You do have to pay to gain access of materials but it is well worth it. I took my permit test today and passed with 100. It sounds unbelievable but isn’t I promise. I could understand the questions and overall helped me. Thank you for creating such a well planned, convenient app that anyone can use!!! I recommend this for teens, college kids, adults, etc because of its convenience and organization.

I love this app. I passed my test because of this app. Only one tiny problem- there is one question on this app that does not match to that of the official DMV written test. My first time seeing the question on Zutobi I clicked my answer but it turned out to be wrong. I thought there was no way it could be that answer, but it was on Zutobi. On the written test though, I got the exact same question from Zutobi and I clicked the answer that Zutobi said to be correct. Guess what? I got it wrong on the written test! Turns out, the answer I knew from the beginning was the correct answer. Thanks a lot Zutobi. No I’m kidding, besides that one question, everything is accurate and very helpful. I recommend this app! Good luck :)

For an app that offers a premium service, but ESSENTIALLY since its a free app, its definitely worth the down load. Granted, if you have a good but of common sense, a majority of the questions are fairly easy. At the start I was reading the lessons they offer before the test, and its good information. However I found that even just skipping straight to the test I average getting 90% of them correct regardless. But the 10% I get wrong was a nice learning experience. They have state specific questions as well which I thought was nice. All in all I didn't need the app, but if your concerned about how clueless to feel when it comes to the rules of the road, this app does a great job to reaffirming your knowledge.

This app allows you to go over all the rules and regulations of the law, while driving. It’s a great way to practice and study before you are ready to take that step in getting your permits or license to drive. Chapters aren’t very long. Corrects you when your wrong, or mini test. And give you a chance to retry the question! Also test your knowledge by giving end of chapter quizzes. (Don’t correct you when you wrong. Give you a chance to see what you know on your own, and tell you how you did at the end of the quiz). That’s the best part! You’ll enjoy this app as much as I do! Considering, um studying for my permits. šŸ˜†šŸ˜† This app was recommended to me by a friend and I love it!

Iowa Parent FAQ

Can parents teach driving in Iowa?

Yes. Iowa requires 20 hours of supervised practice driving (including 2 night hours) with a licensed adult aged 21 or older before a teen can take the driving test. Most of those hours happen with a parent or guardian.

How many supervised driving hours does Iowa require?

20 hours total, with at least 2 of those hours at night. The supervising adult must be 21 years or older and hold a valid license.

Do I need to be a licensed instructor to teach my teen?

No. Any licensed adult 21 or older can supervise practice driving. You do not need an instructor's license.

What is the 30-hour driver's education course my teen needs?

Iowa requires teens between 14 and 18 to complete a 30-hour state-approved driver's education course before applying for a permit. The course covers traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and accident prevention. It can be completed at a state-approved driving school. Zutobi does not replace this course, but supplements it with video-led lessons and exam practice to help your teen pass.

How long does the whole process take for Iowa teens?

At minimum, about 12 months from the time your teen gets their permit. Iowa requires a 12-month holding period, plus 20 supervised hours, plus the 30-hour driver's education course. Most families complete the process in 12 to 15 months.

What happens if my teen fails the Iowa driving test?

Your teen can retake the driving test. Contact the Iowa DOT for current waiting periods and retest procedures. The instruction permit has a limited validity window, so plan accordingly.

How does the Parent-Teen Training Guide help me teach better?

The PTTG gives you a structured curriculum for each driving environment. Instead of guessing what to practice, you follow a progression with coaching points and common mistakes at every level. Instructor Jacqueline R. walks you through each lesson on video.

Is teaching your teen to drive harder than expected?

For most parents, yes. In a Zutobi survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, 54% of those who have taught a teen found it more stressful than expected. A guided system with clear coaching points at each stage makes it manageable.

Is Zutobi science-backed for teen safety?

Yes. Peer-reviewed research shows that structured, varied practice and active parent involvement significantly reduce crash risk for teen drivers. Zutobi's system is designed around these principles.

Follow a Structured System Inside Zutobi

A structured system turns a stressful process into a manageable one. Guided practice, session by session, helps your teen build the habits and confidence they need behind the wheel.
